BREC holiday camps

BREC is offering a variety of holiday camps for children.

WINTER ZOO CAMP: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday to Dec. 29, Baton Rouge Zoo; for ages 6 to 12.

WINTER WONDERS CAMP: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday to Friday, Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center; for ages 7 to 12.

WINTER ROCKET CAMP: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday to Dec. 28, Highland Road Park Observatory; for ages 9 to 13.

AFTER CHRISTMAS JUNIOR TENNIS CAMP: 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to Dec. 29, Highland Road Community Park Tennis Center; for ages 4 to 16.

Additional holiday camps are being offered at various parks and include holiday-themed active and passive games and arts and crafts.

There’s still time to view the ZooLights holiday display of illuminated sculptures, featured through Dec. 30 at Baton Rouge Zoo. The zoo will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

The display features a mile-long trail of more than 50 illuminated animals and traditional holiday symbols. Those attending Friday and Saturday also will be treated to ornament crafting.

Hours are 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., with zoo grounds closing at 9 p.m. Regular zoo admission fees apply.

Book club

Bluebonnet Regional Branch Library’s High Five Book Club for ages 9 to 11 meets at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in meeting room 2.

Members will share their recollections of famous people from Kathleen Krull’s series of collective biographies, followed by the creation of personal journals.

Ugandan Kids Choir

Enjoy traditional African songs and dances in a performance by the Ugandan Kids Choir at 6 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. Saturday at Baton Rouge Zoo.

The choir of 10 Ugandan children is a ministry of Childcare Worldwide’s Sponsorship Program, which aims to break the cycle of poverty. The group has performed across the U.S. at churches, schools, Disneyland, on King 5 Television’s “New Day Northwest” and at the Seattle Seahawks’ Qwest Field.

Closed for Christmas

All East Baton Rouge Parish Library locations will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Regular hours will resume Tuesday.

Garbage collection

Curbside garbage and recycling collection will not take place on Christmas Day. Regular service will resume on the next scheduled day.

All garbage and recycling services will operate as usual on New Year’s Day.

Blue Bayou Christmas

Blue Bayou Water Park is celebrating Christmas with a drive-thru light show at 6 p.m. nightly through Jan. 7. Drive through more than a mile of custom lights synchronized to music played over the radio.

Tickets are $28 per car, tax included, with a limit of eight passengers per car. Cash, credit cards and debit cards are accepted.

Looking to 2018

Children ages 7 to 11 can listen to excerpts from “T is for Time” by Marie and Ronald Smith and create and design a 2018 calendar at Bluebonnet Regional Branch Library. The story and craft session gets underway at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 28.
