The West Feliciana Parish Library has recently been designated a Level 2 WellSpot by the Louisiana Department of Health.

WellSpots are organizations throughout the state that implemented healthy changes in their policies and environment to help their communities live well, a news release said.

LDH designates spaces and places as WellSpots after they voluntarily meet wellness benchmarks that correspond to their organization type — worksite, child care center, school, college/university, restaurant, health care facility or hospital. This could mean going tobacco-free, becoming breast-feeding friendly, offering healthy vending options or implementing worksite wellness programs. These benchmarks impact employees and those that organization serves — students, patients, patrons and more.

The West Feliciana Parish Library met the Level 2 WellSpot requirements by implementing several wellness benchmarks, including a tobacco-free policy, promoting the Louisiana Tobacco Quitline, providing tobacco cessation coverage to its employees, becoming a Breast-feeding Friendly Workplace Champion, promoting the 5-2-1-0 Let’s Go! healthy message, promoting health assessments to employees, providing healthy snacks and adopting a healthy meeting policy.

The West Feliciana Parish Library has been the hub for the St. Francisville community for many years providing online and physical library resources for patrons including meeting spaces, children’s and teen reading spaces, the release said. Its new facility includes a kitchen and more spaces for patrons to relax and enjoy the library’s resources. A new playground and walking trail around the library provide opportunities for physical exercise.

The director of the library, Glenna Fallin, said, “The designation of being a WellSpot will affect many in the community as they begin to see the changes in health consciousness here. Our new policies regarding breast-feeding, smoking and food/beverage content at meetings and programs will, hopefully, cross over to the public’s private lives as well.”

“Well-Ahead Louisiana commends the West Feliciana Parish Library for making the healthy choice the easy choice in their worksite,” said Melissa R. Martin, Well-Ahead Louisiana director. “Being designated as a WellSpot invests in the health of the Baton Rouge community and shows that the West Feliciana Parish Library genuinely cares about those it employs and serves.

As a WellSpot, the West Feliciana Parish Library joins over 2,000 other entities throughout the state. To learn more about the Well-Ahead Louisiana initiative, visit www.wellaheadla.com.
