Trinity Curtis, a third-grade student at Bains Elementary School, submitted a photo taken by P.E. teacher Kristy Barbe to the AASA I Love Public Education Photo Contest, where it won first place.
The photo shows Trinity, who uses a wheelchair, playing with friends.
As the winner of the 9-14 year-old category, Trinity will receive a prize of $1,000 but said she plans to donate the money back to Bains so that it will benefit all students.
Trinity says, "We are all winners" and adds, "I love playing with my friends, especially my BFF Taylor Grace."
She also says, "my pink wheelchair caught their eyes and helped me win. People in wheelchairs can do fun things, too."
Trinity aspires to be a news reporter and business owner.
The photo was highlighted at the National Conference on on Education in Nashville, Tennessee, on Feb. 15, in front of several thousand school superintendents.
