In a day where more emphasis is placed on the zeros in one’s bank account than the character they possess, it is important to remember to have a good name.
Think about it. In almost every arena of life, there is seemingly no concern for a person’s virtue and character. Our society is driven by accumulating money even if it means doing so at the expense of one’s reputation. This take no prisoners, no mercy mentality has gutted us of every sense of sensibility. But there is hope. As in any area of life, we have to stop and re-evaluate our positions in life. Sometimes we have to make U-turns in our lives. And right now is one of those times.
We have all fallen trap to chasing the material things of life while forgetting to groom our character in the process. Many times, we stop grooming our character once we’re free from our parents’ eyesight. As soon as we are given a taste of freedom, our character stops growing, while our egos and desires are on steroids. This type of behavior is natural and common, but there comes a time in each of our lives when we must come back to Earth. We must realize the only true source of foundation we have is our name. Your name is everything. Your reputation is everything. What kind of name do you have? When people think of you, what comes to mind?
Now generally, there is a great divide between the way we view ourselves and the way others view us. Let’s be honest. We know whether or not we have a good name. At this point, whether you have a good name or a not-so-good name, it is time for you and me to make a commitment from this day forward to building character. We are not going to just build any kind of character, but a good solid reputation for being giving, respectable and honest. Building good character and a good name is not something that comes about in two days. It will take time. In fact, it will take us the rest of our lives. This journey to being the solid, dependable, noteworthy being you were created to be starts now. It starts with you and your mindset.
We must make a commitment to ourselves to take ownership of every single area of our lives. The days for cowardly blaming others for our mistakes in life, not keeping our word and failing to live out our talents are over. Now is the time to rise to the occasion of life.
If you commit to life, life will commit to you. Life is not hard. It is no more than an experience to be fulfilled and an opportunity to be fully taken advantage of. You can do it. You were built to do it. Start building your good name. Do not wait. Time is like sand; it will be gone before you know it. Make it happen.
