An Amite man died Tuesday in a two-vehicle crash on La. 43 near La. 16 in St. Helena Parish, State Police said.

Jesus Munoz, 65, was killed in the crash that happened about 11:40 a.m., said Trooper Dustin Dwight, spokesman for Troop L, in a news release.

Munoz was driving a 1997 Ford F-150 truck north on La. 43, Dwight said. As Munoz approached La. 16, he attempted to turn left and failed to yield to a 2001 Ford F-350 truck, driven by Victor Pierce, 60, Dwight said.

Pierce was headed east on La. 16 and was towing a 20-foot flatbed trailer, Dwight said. Pierce's truck crashed into the left front fender and driver's side door of Munoz's truck, then continued into the parking lot of a nearby grocery store. It came to a stop when it crashed into two parked vehicles, Dwight said.

Munoz, who was properly restrained, was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Helena Parish Coroner's Office.

Pierce, who was also properly restrained, suffered moderate injuries and was taken to a hospital, Dwight said.

Neither driver is suspected of being impaired; however, blood samples were taken from both drivers for analysis at the State Police Crime Lab, Dwight said.
