A West Feliciana Parish bridge on La. 965 between Freeland Road and La. 10 has been shut down for emergency repairs.

According to Jim Ferguson, director of public works for West Feliciana Parish, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development was expected to begin repairs last week.

Ferguson said the nature of the bridge repair work appears to be the abutment or headwall under the bridge that sustained damage after heavy rains in late February.

Once DOTD workers begin the repair, motorists can expect five to 10 days for the work to be completed pending weather, Ferguson said.

“We will be coordinating with the DOTD and continue to provide updated information as we receive it,” said Ferguson.

Child round-up, open house

A child roundup for West Feliciana Parish youths from birth through age 4 will coincide with an open house event at Bains Lower Elementary School in St. Francisville.

Bains Lower Elementary and the West Feliciana Parish Family Service Center are hosting the Spring open house for parents who have children entering prekindergarten, head start or early head start in fall 2015.

Meet the author

Author Rod Davis will be at the West Feliciana Parish Library, 5114 Burnett Road, St. Francisville, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. March 24 to read from and discuss his new novel, “South, America.” The mystery novel is set in New Orleans and parts of Mississippi.

“Davis is an academic from Texas, but his book reads as if it were written by a born and bred New Orleans native,” said Olivia Pass, chairwoman of the West Feliciana organization, A Celebration of Literature and Art. “Not only is it a page-turner with a thoughtfully poignant, mixed-race couple at the forefront of the adventure, but the prose is beautifully paced and intelligently written.”

A short meeting will follow the author’s presentation to discuss the formation of an area writers’ group. This event is free.

Light refreshments will be served. For information, email Pass at oliviapass@bellsouth.net.
