Numerous studies have noted a phenomenon called summer slide, which relates to school skills lost when students leave school in mid-May and do not return until mid-August, according to Supervisor Bridget Plauche, of the Family Service Center and West Feliciana Parish schools.
“Teachers often have to reteach skills from the previous grade in order for students to catch up when they begin the new school year,” Plauche said. “To mitigate the summer slide, West Feliciana Schools, the Family Service Center and Capital Area United Way have formed a partnership to study ways to address the issue.”
Also, the Bridge Institute will provide a summer enrichment program for youth leaving Head Start, preschool or child care and going into formal prekindergarten classes. The summer enrichment initiative is a five-week program from May to June.
Children attend four days each week, are served breakfast and lunch, and provided bus transportation. The program’s focus is on literacy, math and science and will include interactive, hands-on activities each day, Plauche said.
Children aged 4, or who will turn 4 by September , are eligible to attend. The program has a capacity to serve 60 children.
As part of Capital Area United Way’s educational initiatives program, the Bridge Institute will be fully funded.
Registration is open, and information can be obtained by calling the Family Service Center at (225) 635-5299 or Head Start at (225) 635-5449.
“The partnership of CAUW and West Feliciana Parish Schools will translate into many opportunities for children and families,” Plauche said. “We’re very grateful for this partnership and look forward to working closely with United Way.”

Volleyball reunion April 25
After 20 years of coaching volleyball at West Feliciana High School, Celeste Thornhill has decided it’s time for a volleyball reunion.
West Feliciana High alumni are invited to watch former classmates and Lady Saints volleyball players from 1996 to 2014 compete in a friendly volleyball tournament, said Georgia Dudley, of WFHS.
The event will be in the high school gym at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 25. Games begin at 1 p.m. Pastalaya, concessions and T-shirts commemorating the event will be sold. Admission is $5 per person.
All proceeds generated will benefit the Lady Saints volleyball program.
“This event is a great opportunity for former players to reunite and run the court together again while raising funds for the West Feliciana volleyball program,” Thornhill said.
