The Louisiana Veterans Foundation presented a $1,500 scholarship to LSU student Jared Smith, of Lake Charles. Smith’s father is a disabled Green Beret major in the Army.

Smith is a sophomore at LSU and maintains an overall GPA of 4.0 in his premed major.

A majority of the funding for the foundation’s scholarship program comes from the LA Vets Fest, scheduled for Sept. 26 in St. Francisville.

Proceeds from the West Feliciana Parish-based festival provide undergraduate educational opportunities for Louisiana veterans, their families and the families of active duty military personnel.

Saturday’s festival will feature performances from area bands, baseball, fishing, a rodeo, vintage car show, food and cooking contests, a silent auction, 5K and much more. Visit lavetsfest.org for information.
