The West Feliciana Drug and Alcohol Awareness Council, West Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office and Bank of St. Francisville sponsored the Harvey Rabbit and Friends program Feb. 26 for students attending Bains Lower and Bains elementary schools.

Entertainers Tim and Laura Allured, of Lafayette, presented “Hooray for the Drug Free Team” using ventriloquism, puppetry, music, magic, comedy, dancing and audience participation.

Programs during school months include messages about choosing to stay drug, alcohol and tobacco free and anti-bullying, while summer programs are about library etiquette, books and reading.

The Allureds said students demonstrate a sense of self-worth, make good decisions, resist negative peer pressure, resist bullying and resolve conflicts peacefully by following “team rules” presented in the program. Other “rules” include trying your best, expecting success, avoiding a fight, making choices right and saying no to drugs.

By developing these skills and good attitudes, students reduce their tendencies for substance abuse, the Allureds said.

Both are graduates of McNeese University in Lake Charles and were music teachers in Calcasieu Parish before retiring in 1986 and taking their act on the road fulltime.
