The 2016 Richard N. Ware IV State High School Mock Trial competition was held Feb. 26-27 at the 19th Judicial District Courthouse in Baton Rouge.
Twenty-two teams from 12 high schools in Ascension, East Baton Rouge, Tangipahoa, Washington and West Feliciana parishes participated, and the West Feliciana team won second place behind a Zachary High team.
Both will advance to the Louisiana School Board Association’s State Mock Trial tournament on Saturday in Baton Rouge.
The mock trial competitions are organized by the Baton Rouge Bar Foundation and include three rounds on the first day of competition, with winning teams advancing to the final two rounds the following day.
Students prepare a hypothetical case for both the prosecution and the defense to present in court and are judged by a mock jury.
Other teams that competed were from Baton Rouge, Belaire, Catholic, Central, Donaldsonville, Episcopal, Franklinton, Loranger, Mentorship Academy, Scotlandville Magnet and Southern University Lab high schools.
