Following Fire Protection District No. 1’s burn advisory for West Feliciana Parish residents on Oct. 12, the Louisiana fire marshal and Department of Agriculture and Forestry issued a burn ban on all private burning.

Private burning will be allowed by the permission of local fire departments or local government, and farmers will be allowed to burn, Commissioner of Agriculture Mike Strain said in a news release.

“Just because farmers can burn doesn’t mean they should, and if they decide to, they should go through special training to become a prescribed burner,” said Strain.

The burn ban is in response to extremely dry conditions, abnormal emergency responses and adverse future weather predictions. Violation could result in criminal or civil penalties.

Those allowed to burn should do so only in small amounts after 8 a.m. and extinguish fires before 6 p.m. Fires should never be left unattended, and water must be available for extinguishing spot fires, West Feliciana Fire Chief James Wood said.

Locally, those allowed to burn must first call the West Feliciana 911 Communications Center at (225) 784-3136 prior to the burn.
