A fishing tournament was held as part of the annual Louisiana Veterans Festival on Sept. 26 in St. Francisville.
Brothers Benton and Sutton Green won first place with 58 fish, four catfish and 54 bream; second-place winner was father-son team Mykell and Melvin Smothers, with 12 fish; and third-place finisher was father-son team Michael Adams and Chris Morgan, 11 fish.
The competition was sponsored by the West Feliciana Parish 4-H Club and West Feliciana Sports Park.
André Brock, LSU agricultural and 4-H agent, said the club provided the bait, water and prizes, while the Sports Park, on behalf of new hire Brittany Babineaux, donated ice cream, and archery and kayak lessons to the participants.
In summer 2014, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries stocked the pond with 750 hybrid bream that are gaining in size, Brock said.
Park officials also stocked the pond with 1,000 catfish, which were 6 inches long when added to the pond.
Park Director Rob Hunter and staff remind West Feliciana residents that the pond is open to the community, and the fish are biting.
