Editor’s Note: The following is the first in a three-part series on the annual Christmas Tour of Homes.
Four homes in West Feliciana Parish and St. Mary’s Episcopal Church will be opened to the community during the annual Christmas Tour of Homes sponsored by Friends of the West Feliciana Parish Library.
Decked in their Christmas finest, the homes and church are located just north of St. Francisville and will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 5 as part of St. Francisville’s Christmas in the Country weekend, held Dec. 4-6.
Two of the homes are located in Weyanoke and are connected by a bridge — Harmony House at 6876 Ouida-Irondale Road and Melody House at 6878 Ouida-Irondale Road.
Both are located off La. 66 (Angola Road).
Keith Koppens and the late Paul Fowler built Harmony House as a guest house for the Ouida Plantation in 1999.
Local designer Ellen Kennon designed the cottage based on the architectural design she created for her own home but increased Harmony’s size to about 2,200 square feet.
The name Harmony House comes from the six designers who worked together to coordinate paint colors, fabrics and decor, Kennon said.
Located on 7 private acres, Harmony House was often rented out as a bed-and-breakfast retreat where Randy Hunter and Janie Simmons often stayed.
Hunter purchased the property in 2000, furnishings and all, extending the deck and bringing in soil to create a side yard.
Later, he built Melody House for Simmons, joining the two houses with a 150-foot bridge that crosses a 60-foot wooded ravine. Both homes have extensive screened porches with double fireplaces and spacious decks.
In spring 2014, when Hunter and Simmons decided to move closer to town, Koppens and his partners, Vincent Chatelain and Pam Randazza, purchased the houses.
Tickets to the Tour of Homes are $25 each and can be purchased online at brownpapertickets.com; the West Feliciana Parish Library, 5114 Burnett Road; Louisiana Gift Basket Company, 5634 Commerce St., Suite B; and The Conundrum Book Shop, 11917 Ferdinand St.
