School bus drivers like Hilda Grant offered a cool treat to seventh-graders such as Jamie Kerr on her bus ride home during the first week of school in West Feliciana Parish.
Parish buses were equipped with ice chests and free bottled water for the students to combat the scorching heat on their rides home.
School Board Administrator Ruthie Davis said she had some extra money in the parish’s budget from various donations that were intended to be spent on students. Davis said the school district purchased 60 cases of water made available to all bus drivers to give to student riders during the oppressive heat wave.
“We wanted to make sure the children were safe with the extreme temperatures, especially on the longer rides like to Tunica,” Davis said. “We assumed they’d all need it, and we wanted to have it there for them. All the drivers said the kids were saying ‘thanks’ for the waters.”
