During the height of the Civil War on June 12, 1863, the two sides paused fighting to bury Lt. Commander John E. Hart, the federal commander of the USS Albatross, in a Masonic ceremony in Grace Episcopal Church cemetery.

Every year, St. Francisville hosts a re-enactment of the events from “The Day the War Stopped.”

This year’s activities included a concert of vintage music and performance by the Louisiane Vintage Dancers, a historic lecture about the USS Albatross, a play featuring readings from Hart’s letters to his wife and re-enactors dressed in authentic replica costumes performing Hart’s burial at Grace Church as it was 153 years ago.
