Layne Langley, West Feliciana nutrition agent with the LSU Agricultural Center, kept things exciting during a recent visit to Bains Lower Elementary in St. Francisville.

Langley visited prekindergarten, kindergarten and first-grade students as part of a garden and nutrition lesson that teaches youth about the five food groups — dairy, fruits, grains, proteins and vegetables. The lesson centered around whole grains.

“They were led through a ‘great grain’ obstacle course of sorts that featured spaghetti stretches, popcorn hops, cereal circles, rice runs and cracker crunches. It was a great way to teach the students that grains give us energy,” Langley said.

The youth played a game of pulling cards from a bucket then guessing which food group the item on the card belongs.

“They love this game, and these indoor lessons and activities worked well in teaching the students about grains, proteins and MyPlate,” Langley said.
