ST. FRANCISVILLE — West Feliciana Middle School seventh-grader Nick Lester was recently elected president at the Junior Beta Club’s statewide convention in Lafayette.
Lester was elected by the convention’s delegates in a race against three other boys.
National Beta Club is a student-centered organization that promotes academic achievement, character, service and leadership among elementary and secondary school students. As president, his duties included presiding over the convention, leading meetings, speaking and sharing ideas.
“I wanted to be a leader and lead other people to try to make Beta way more fun,” said Nick.
He credits the Leader In Me program instituted this year at WFMS for helping him decide to run for the office. He said he also became very instrumental in cleanup efforts after the historic flooding in August that ravaged much of south Louisiana.
“I do what I can to help as many kids get back in school and get their houses repaired and cleaned up,” said Nick, who hopes to one day play major league baseball or, if that doesn’t work out, plans for a career in law enforcement.
His interests include playing baseball, football and basketball in addition to outdoor activities such as shooting guns and bows, fishing and riding four-wheelers.
