West Feliciana Parish President Kevin Couhig has announced that the funding to replace the Jacock Road Bridge has been approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The bridge crosses Barrow Creek on Jacock Road, about a quarter-mile east of Bains Road in St. Francisville.
The bridge has been inundated with high water several times in the past, stranding more than 60 residents each time, Couhig said.
The parish administration submitted the application to FEMA earlier this year, in hopes of receiving the specific funds made available through the Federal Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.
The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security is officially designated by FEMA to administer the program.
The existing bridge will be replaced by a raised concrete structure that is less prone to flooding, parish officials said.
Sigma Consulting Group, of Baton Rouge, will provide the engineering services for the first phase of the project.
That design work is expected to be complete by the end of 2016, and construction could begin as soon as spring 2017.
