At least a dozen residents of a Pointe Coupee Parish neighborhood were taken to local hospital Thursday afternoon to be checked for various illnesses they say are related to a gas leak earlier today, parish officials said.
Parish Administrator John Grezaffi said a contractor cutting grass in the Claiborne subdivision, located off La. 1 outside of New Roads, severed an exposed natural gas line sometime today.
Grezaffi said the gas leak has since been stopped but people who live in the area were being transported to the hospitals after reporting that they have been suffering from nausea and vomiting.
Most of those transported for treatment live along Daily and Johnson streets, according to parish officials who were on the scene trying to learn more about what happened.
