A car passenger died Sunday night after he was ejected from a vehicle that crashed into a guardrail on Interstate 10 in Iberville Parish, State Police reported Monday.

The accident occurred shortly after midnight when Daryann Villareal, a 19-year-old woman from Jackson, Mississippi, fell asleep at the wheel and crashed her car into the guardrail near the exit ramp to La. 975 in Ramah.

When Villareal’s Toyota Camry spun out of control, her passenger, 47-year-old Kenith Simpson, was ejected from the car. Simpson, also from Jackson, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Trooper 1st Class Bryan Lee said Simpson was not wearing a seatbelt; Villareal was restrained and received moderate injures, Lee said Monday.

Charges against Villareal are “pending,” Lee said. Impairment was not suspected to be a factor.
