Plaquemine City Park, now boasting a Water Spray Park and a Skateboard Park, has received the Louisiana Municipal Association’s Achievement Award.
The award is the association’s highest community development honor presented for outstanding municipal improvements.
The program recognizes municipalities for outstanding achievement in basic services, community development and economic development. Plaquemine won the award for cities with populations between 3,000 and 10,000.
The Water Spray Park is open between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends through Labor Day, when it closes for the year.
An Iberville honor
The Iberville Parish Council designated Aug. 16 as “Victoria Alexander Holland Day” in recognition of Holland’s “outstanding citizenship and community involvement.”
The lifelong Iberville Parish resident is the mother of seven children, grandmother of 20 and great-grandmother of 28.
Holland is a member of St. John the Baptist Church who was employed as a school food service worker between 1960 and 1976.
The state of WBR
West Baton Rouge Parish President Riley “Peewee” Berthelot is scheduled to delivery his annual State of the Parish address at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 31 in the Addis Community Center. Also scheduled to speak at the event is U.S. Sen. David Vitter, R-La., who plans to discuss strategies for creating jobs. Mentoring for the future
The Mentoring Minds for the Future community organization will hold an open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 3 at Port Allen’s Masonic Hall, 1044 Michigan Ave.
The group, made up of mothers, invites the public to attend the open house to learn about Mentoring Minds’ strategies for promoting education, discouraging bullying and increasing self-esteem among youth.
A luncheon and an expo
Deadline to reserve a seat for the Iberville Chamber of Commerce’s East Iberville Membership Luncheon is noon Friday.
The luncheon will be held between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Aug. 30 at Gabriel’s House, in St. Gabriel. Mayor Lionel Johnson Jr. is scheduled to be the guest speaker. The luncheon costs $15 and can be paid in cash or by check at the door during the event.
