The Pointe Coupee Sheriff’s Office has identified the man who drowned in False River on Monday afternoon as Marlon Sharper, 19, of Morganza.

Capt. Steve Juge said Sharper fell into the south end of False River near the old Bonaventure Boat Landing on La. 1, not far from the community of Oscar at about 5 p.m.

He was working at a café near the boat landing with his brother, Juge said.

Sharper’s brother went to their truck and when he turned around, he saw Sharper in the water, Juge said. They are unsure how he got in the water.

The brother jumped in to try to save him but was unable to reach him, Juge said. Investigators were told that Sharper did not know how to swim.

The body was found off the pier at the landing, Juge said.
