NEW ROADS — A New Roads police officer was fired from the department and booked with two felonies Friday after he admitted stealing $800 from a woman while on the job, Police Chief Kevin McDonald said.
Patrolman Juan Gauthier responded to a New Roads home Friday morning to assist a woman who was having a medical problem, McDonald said.
Inside the home, Gauthier, a five-year veteran of the Police Department, picked up the money from where it had been lying on top of the woman’s bed, McDonald said.
The woman noticed the money missing and called police after emergency responders left her home, the chief said.
The woman specifically identified Gauthier as one of the few people who were inside her bedroom during the medical call, McDonald said.
Detectives confronted Gauthier, and the officer confessed, McDonald said.
Police booked Gauthier, no age or address given, with felony theft and malfeasance in office, the chief said.
