The West Baton Rouge Parish Council on Thursday adopted a $1.4 million half-year budget for the newly consolidated parishwide fire department.

The budget, which takes effect July 1, sets aside $422,000 in salaries for 19 firefighters and $50,000 for overtime contingencies, said parish Financial Officer Phillip Bourgoyne.

“This is the first budget for a parishwide fire department so I didn’t really have very much data to go on to base a projected overtime amount,” Bourgoyne said.

Earlier this year, the council merged the six municipal fire departments into one parishwide entity.

The next largest line item in the budget, $165,313, is the employer’s contribution to the firefighters’ retirement fund.
