The Dow Westside YMCA and West Baton Rouge Parks and Recreation Department have partnered and will offer swimming lessons this summer for local children between the ages of 3 and 12 at Williams and Lee Park in Port Allen.
The first 30 new participants to each of the four sessions will be accepted. There is a fee of $10 per participant for each session.
The sessions are scheduled from May 31 to June 10; June 14 to June 24; June 28 to July 8; and July 12 to July 22. Each lesson will be 30 minutes, and children will be divided into the following age groups: 3 to 5; 6 to 9; and 10 to 12.

Church celebrates women
Shiloh Baptist Church is inviting the public to its program celebrating Women’s Day at 7 a.m. Sunday at the church, 950 Seventh St., Port Allen.
The program’s guest speaker will be the Rev. Shauna Banks Johnson, of Greater St. Mary Baptist Church in Plaquemine.
BRCC nursing program
Baton Rouge Community College is offering an eight-week certified nursing assistant program on its Plaquemine campus.
The course will be held from June 6 to July 2. Upon successful completion, graduates will be qualified to work as a certified nursing assistant. The course also serves as a prerequisite for those entering the college’s licensed practical nurse program next fall.
Classes will meet from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Tuition assistance is available for students who qualify. Payment plans are available.
Applicants must take an entrance test, which can be met through acceptable Compass or ACT reading scores. Applicants are required to submit a state-level criminal background check and health screening.

BRCC also will offer the Compass test, the official placement test for the community college, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 26 at the BRCC Westside location, 25250 Tennant Road, Plaquemine.
There is no fee to take the test for the first time. The test takes up to 90 minutes.

Family festival, bingo night
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Maringouin will host its annual bingo at 7 p.m. Friday in the church hall and then its Family Festival on Sunday.
There will be a barbecue chicken dinner for $7 per plate from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the day of the festival. There also will be a raffle for $1,000.
