West Baton Rouge Parish President Riley “Peewee” Berthelot is scheduled to deliver his annual State of the Parish address at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Addis Community Center.
Also scheduled to speak at the event is U.S. Sen. David Vitter, R-La., who plans to discuss strategies for creating jobs.

Mentoring for the future
The Mentoring Minds for the Future community organization has scheduled an open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Port Allen’s Masonic Hall, 1044 Michigan Ave.
The group, made up of mothers, invites the public to attend the open house to learn about Mentoring Minds’ strategies for promoting education, discouraging bullying and increasing self-esteem among youth.
Dow safety recognized
The Dow Chemical Co. recently attained recognition from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for its Voluntary Protection Program. The recognition marks 21 consecutive years that Dow has reached OHSA VPP status.
VPP status is awarded to employers and workers in private industries and federal agencies who have implemented effective safety and health management systems.
The recognition is also awarded to entities maintaining injury and illness rates below national Bureau of Labor Statistics averages in their respective industries.
Reflections of 9/11
The public is invited to the West Baton Rouge Museum at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 11 for a reception to honor emergency responders from the Greater Baton Rouge area.
There will be a brief program followed by a screening of the 2006 film “World Trade Center” following the reception.
Admission to the museum is free on Sept. 11. Refreshments will be served during the program.

West Baton Rouge Parish Registrar of Voters Stacy L. Ryan reminds candidates seeking public office that qualifying for the Oct. 22 primary elections begins Tuesday and will run through Sept. 8.
The primary election ballot offers choices on all statewide races, state Senate districts, state House districts, parishwide races, Parish Council districts, mayor and council at-large offices for Port Allen and the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Voters also decide a parishwide proposition for disabled veterans, a Sunday alcohol proposition for unincorporated areas of the parish, a Sunday alcohol proposition for Port Allen and five proposed constitutional amendments.
