Port Allen Mayor Derek Lewis announced Tuesday morning he is resigning, the mayor’s attorney, Tommy D’Amico said.
D’Amico said Lewis told his staff he is stepping down because of his pending federal indictment.
Lewis is facing a federal racketeering indictment as part of a federal government sting operation known as Operation Blighted Officials.
Lewis is accused of taking bribes to help promote a garbage-can-cleaning service known as Cifer 5000.
Lewis’s trial is scheduled for July 25 in Baton Rouge.
