State Police have identified a trucker and his passenger, both of Texas, who were killed in a multi-18-wheeler crash early Monday on Interstate 10 near Grosse Tete.

Alex Willett, 55, of Orange was driving a 2016 Peterbuilt eastbound around 2 a.m., with John Mack, 53, of Beaumont as his passenger, police said in a news release.

Willett failed to reduce his speed, for unknown reasons, as he approached congestion from a previous crash, police said. The truck struck a 2016 Freightliner, setting off a chain reaction crash ultimately involving four 18-wheelers. The Freightliner overturned and came to rest in the median.

Willet and Mack sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash, police said, and were pronounced deceased at the scene by the West Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office. The other parties involved sustained minor to moderate injuries.

Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, police said, adding that a toxicology sample will be taken from all drivers for analysis.
