PIERRE PART — A man killed his girlfriend with a shotgun blast Wednesday morning while she was holding their 7-month-old baby, then committed suicide by turning the firearm on himself, Assumption Parish Sheriff Mike Waguespack said.
Deputies called to the mobile home at 119 Tut St. found Heather Granier, 26, dead in a hallway and the baby boy lying unharmed in a pool of blood, Waguespack said.
Granier had been shot in the head with a 20-gauge shotgun, Waguespack said.
Deputies also found Henry Walker Jr., 29, on the floor near Granier. Walker had self-inflicted shotgun wounds in his face and the left side of his chest near his heart, the sheriff said.
Walker was flown to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, where he was pronounced dead around 10 a.m., the sheriff said.
The Louisiana Department of Community Services took custody of the infant and will likely place him with a family member, Waguespack said.
Granier and Walker had been engaged in an on-again, off-again relationship for an undetermined length of time, the sheriff said.
The couple had moved within the last month and a half from Vidalia in Concordia Parish to live with Granier’s father and stepmother in Pierre Part, Waguespack said.
Investigators believe the couple had been arguing over money due to Walker’s inability to find a job, the sheriff said.
Wednesday morning’s argument likely started when Walker refused to show up for a job opportunity, Waguespack said.
Authorities hadn’t received any reports of violence involving the couple prior to Wednesday’s shootings, the sheriff said.
Walker, 297 Leland Loop, Sicily Island, however, had been arrested several times in the past, according to a news release.
He also previously had his probation revoked while serving a sentence for aggravated criminal damage to property in Concordia Parish, Waguespack said.
