PORT ALLEN — The West Baton Rouge Parish school system’s academic achievement has improved in the past five years, but it received just average grades for overall performance, according to state report cards issued this month.

Superintendent David Corona said the school district’s performance score has risen 14.9 points — from 81.1 to 96 — between 2007 and 2011.

The state’s overall score, meanwhile, increased 7.7 points, from 85.3 to 93.0 during the same time period, records show.

The district performance score measures how students fare on testing, attendance and dropout rates. The maximum score for districts and individual schools is about 200.

In addition to performance scores, the state Department of Education has also begun grading schools and school districts with A through F letter grades measuring academic improvement from year to year.

Most West Baton Rouge schools received D and C grades, while the best showing was a B, Corona said during Wednesday’s regular School Board meeting.

The district received an overall C grade. It is ranked 27th out of 70 school districts in the state, Corona said.

“Our school system was graded as average,” Corona said after the meeting. “I accept that. We’ve been improving over the last five years and we’ll continue to improve.”
