Plaquemine’s Main Street Program is looking for artists interested in participating in its new event, Art on the Bayou, taking place at the Bayou Plaquemine Waterfront Park Pavilion on May 31.

The event is free and open to the public. All art forms are welcome, and artists will not be charged a booth fee to display and/or sell their art.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and feature art demonstrations throughout the day.

Brotherhood Ride

The Plaquemine Elks Lodge will host a benefit dinner at 7 p.m. Wednesday to raise money for The Brotherhood Ride before the group kicks off its nine-day journey honoring 19 firefighters from Texas who died in the line of duty in 2013.

The dinner will be held at the Elks Lodge, 59195 Belleview Drive, in Plaquemine.

The Brotherhood Ride consists of firefighters, police officers and EMS personnel who ride bicycles to honor emergency first responders who have died in the line of duty.

This year the team will cover more than 750 miles during its nine-day cycling tour, averaging approximately 80 to 100 miles each day.

The group will begin its bike tour at 9 a.m. Thursday morning in Plaquemine with a send-off ceremony also taking place at the Plaquemine Elks Lodge.

Museum lunchtime lecture

The West Baton Rouge Museum will host a lecture titled “Gorham Silver in the Belle Époque” at noon Thursday, May 29, featuring Mel Buchanan, a curator of Decorative Arts and Design from the New Orleans Museum of Art.

Buchanan’s talk will cover the artistry and craft that flourished at the Gorham Manufacturing Co. during the “Belle Époque” period — or roughly the turn-of-the-century years starting in the 1870s and ending with World War I in 1914.

The event is free.

Hats Off Gala

St. Aubry Ladies Auxiliary Court No. 119 will host its annual Hats Off Gala fundraiser at 3 p.m. June 1 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church Hall in Maringouin.

The organization encourages attendees to wear a hat.

Water spray park opens

The Plaquemine Water Spray Park at City Park will open Saturday.

The park, 24505 Ferdinand St., features 12,000 square feet of water falls, sprays and playful water toys for lots of fun in the sun.

Iberville Parks and Recreation will have supervision at the park, but children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

The park will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. The park is closed Monday.

Admission is free.
