ST. GABRIEL — The Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office on Thursday launched a homicide investigation after what they believe to be human remains were found along the levee bank near the intersections of La. 74 and La. 75 in St. Gabriel.
Sheriff Brett Stassi said a fisherman walking along the levee discovered the bones around 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Stassi said investigators believe the remains were washed ashore by the Mississippi River and not dumped at the site.
The sheriff said the remains are being sent to State Crime Lab for DNA testing.
While the investigation is being treated as a possible homicide, Stassi said he suspects the bones could be from one of four people who committed suicide by jumping from a bridge into the Mississippi River within the past few months.
