St. Joseph Ladies Altar Society members will host their annual Fried Chicken Dinner from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Sunday in the Iberville Parish Hall, 76950 Gum St., Grosse Tete.

Dinners will be on sale for $6 a plate. Desserts and beverages also will be available for purchase.

During the dinner, presenters from several community organizations will offer information about groups such as Along the Bayou Garden Club, We are the Difference, Louisiana Art and Artists’ Guild and many others.

Student awards

The Iberville Parish school system will honor 16 outstanding students from throughout the parish during its Student of the Year awards ceremony Wednesday at the Optional Education Center in Plaquemine.

The ceremony begins at 5:30 p.m., with a reception immediately following.

Parents and community members are invited to attend.

Annual reunion

The Plaquemine Lock State Historic Site will host its annual reunion from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday for relatives of former lock employees and boaters who once used it.

Reunion participants are welcome to bring pictures, newspaper articles or any other items associated with the Plaquemine Lock. A tour of the lock house, chamber and antique boat pavilion will be offered.

Noon lecture

The West Baton Rouge Museum will host a lecture at noon Thursday titled, “Early History of Mulatto Bend in West Baton Rouge.”

Historian Lee Smith will serve as guest speaker. Smith has spent several years researching and writing about Mulatto Bend, uncovering new information about the community made up of free people of color from 1763 to 1865.

One night performance

The Baton Rouge High Festival Singers will perform at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Julien Poydras Museum and Arts Center.

The singers, meanwhile, are getting ready for a February concert tour of Italy that includes a performance for Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican.

Thursday’s concert is free and open to the public. Donations to help defray the group’s travel expenses for its nine performances in Italy will be accepted.

Following the concert, Le Krewe de Poydras will host a king cake reception during which the new king and queen of Le Krewe de Poydras will be crowned.

Leadership banquet

The West Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce will host its annual banquet at 6 p.m. Feb. 6 at the Addis Community Center, where the chamber will install its officers and directors for 2013.

The Advocate’s Smiley Anders will serve as the event’s guest speaker.

The evening will consist of a silent auction and cocktails before a sit-down dinner.
