PLAQUEMINE —A Plaquemine man was struck and killed by a vehicle while walking across a roadway about 4 a.m. Tuesday near Plaquemine, State Police said.
Gene Ellis, 66, is believed to have been impaired while walking from the east side of the road on La. 1 just north of La. 992-3, Trooper First Class Bryan Lee said in a news release. Ellis was hit by a southbound Chevrolet Silverado pickup driven by 31-year-old Jeremy Gulotta, of Plaquemine. Gulotta was given a breath test and showed no signs of intoxication, Lee said.
Ellis was pronounced dead at the scene by the Iberville Parish Coroner’s Office. Authorities took a toxicology sample from Ellis and will submit it to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
