PLAQUEMINE — An Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy accused of punching his estranged wife in the face on Sunday was fired following his arrest the same day, Sheriff Brett Stassi reported Wednesday.
John Gaudet, was booked on Sunday into the parish jail on a count of domestic abuse battery after police responded to a 911 call at the house he shared with his wife, who he was in the process of divorcing.
Gaudet’s wife told authorities the 34-year-old man, who served as a deputy in Iberville Parish for approximately 15 years, had punched her in the face and physically assaulted her during an argument.
“When my guys showed up she had a bruised eye and marks all over her body,” Stassi said.
Gaudet tried to explain away the woman’s injuries by telling authorities the woman had slammed the refrigerator door at him and when he slammed it back at her, it hit her in the face, according to the sheriff.
“He was fired and arrested right then,” Stassi said. “He’s not the kind of person I’m looking for to represent me on the streets.”
Stassi said Gaudet had worked in his addiction unit but was recently transferred to the sheriff’s uniform patrol before the incident.
Gaudet has already bonded out of jail following the arrest.
