The Zachary boys and girls track teams continued their dominating spring performances, sweeping the titles at the Red Stick Classic meet and picking up a couple of additional wins at the Sugar Bowl Invitational.
The Broncos brought their full boys team and a small contingent of girls to the Red Stick Classic and swept both titles. The boys earned 130.7 points to finish ahead of Southern Lab (81), Glen Oaks (78.6), Scotlandville (60) and Parkview Baptist (48.7).
Leading the way for the Bronco boys were Kelton Hollins, with a winning shot putt throw of 50 feet, 10 inches; Evan Landry, first in the javelin with a toss of 161-6 and L’Jean McKneely, tied for third in the high jump (5-4).
Other top finishers included John Paul Hardin, second in the 1,600-meter run in 4:48.61; William Heidke, second, 800-meter run (2:11.41); Travis Simmons, second, 300-meter hurdles (42.67); Caleb Whetstone, second, pole vault (8-6); Christopher Bennett, second, 3,200-meter run (10:50.18) and Dominick Thomas, third (10:51.00); Simmons (16.20) and McKneely (16.82), second and third, respectively, in the 100-meter hurdles; Dylan Honore, third, discus (112-6); Deonte Bacon, third, long jump (20-11); and the 4x100-meter relay team, third (44.33).
The Zachary girls led the way with 188 points ahead of Baton Rouge High (113), Parkview Baptist (102.5), Broadmoor (56.5) and Runnels (44). The girls were paced by wins from Candace Baity in the 100-meter hurdles (15.13) and the 300-meter hurdles (49.75); Kristian Jackson in the shot put (42-9) and discus (125-3); Kiara Bethley in the 100-meter dash (12.54); Indya Jackson in the 400-meter run (1:00.26); Janie O’Connor in the 200-meter dash (24.29); A’Neseya Dunn in the javelin (106-8); Frankie Griffin in the high jump (5-5); and the 4x100 (51.13) and 4x400 (4:10.90) relay teams.
Other top finishes by the Lady Broncos included Nique Griffin, second, long jump (16-2½) and third, 400-meter run (1:05.94); Lydia Johnson, second, triple jump (31-7) and third, 300-meter hurdles (56.46); Frankie Griffin, second, 100-meter hurdles (16.41); Dakota Williams, second, 100-meter dash (12.89); Bethley, second, 200-meter dash (25.70); Rebecca Day, third, 3,200-meter run (13:49.86); and the 4x200 relay team, third (1:46.39).
O’Connor shines in N.O. meet
Fresh off her 10th-place finish in the New Balance Indoor meet in New York the week before, Zachary sprinter Janie O’Connor swept to first-place finishes in the Sugar Bowl Invitational at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans on March 19.
The Zachary girls finished in fourth place in the meet that drew teams from across the Southern region with 55 points.
O’Connor captured first places in the 100-meter dash in 12:04 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 24.87 seconds. The Lady Broncos also had a first-place finish from high jumper Frankie Griffin, who won with a leap of 5 feet, 2 inches. The Zachary 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams each finished second in 48.33 seconds and 1:39.86 seconds, respectively.
Jackson lifts ZHS to seventh
Zachary’s Kristian Jackson had a busy week. Not only did she sweep shot put and discus titles at the Red Stick Classic, she also lifted Zachary to a seventh-place finish at the LHSAA Powerlifting state meet in Monroe.
Competing in the 181-pound weight class in the Division I meet at the University of Louisiana at Monroe on Saturday, Jackson had a total lift of 935 pounds to finish in second place behind Alexandria’s Brittany Williams, who won with 985 pounds. Jackson was the only Zachary lifter to place in the meet and she earned five points, placing her team in seventh.
