Independence Day is one of the most popular days to set off fireworks, but unless you’re a professional, fireworks are illegal in East Baton Rouge Parish and banned in communities such as Baker and Zachary.

Authorities have said fireworks will be confiscated if they are found, and anyone found shooting fireworks could face criminal charges.

Additionally, state law prohibits anyone from selling fireworks to children under the age of 15.

Fireworks restrictions differ from parish to parish and in their municipalities. For detailed information about fireworks laws in your parish or municipality, visit your respective government website.

A list of Louisiana parishes and links to their local government websites can be found at louisiana.gov.

Zachary’s ordinance on fireworks reads: “Pyrotechnics (any sparkler, squib, rocket, firecracker, Roman candle, signal lights, fireworks or other devices or compositions) used to obtain visible or audible pyrotechnic displays are prohibited.

“It is unlawful for any person to have, store, use, manufacture, sell, offer to sell, handle or transport any pyrotechnics within city limits.

“Pyrotechnics displays in public parks or other open places for which a permit has been issued by the mayor for such a display is allowed, however, the mayor shall determine that proper safeguards have been made for safeguarding of life and property and shall provide police and fire protection in connection with the authorized display.

“The chief of police, fire chief and police officers are authorized to seize and confiscate all pyrotechnics sold, exchanged or possessed in violation of this article.”

“No one wants to ruin their holiday with an accident that could have been avoided,” Fire Chief Danny Kimble said.

Kimble said if residents plan on celebrating the Fourth of July elsewhere, outside of Zachary or East Baton Rouge Parish, take the following precautions to ensure a safe holiday:

Obey all local laws on the use of fireworks.

Only a responsible adult should supervise firework activities.

Alcohol and fireworks do not mix.

Light one firework at a time and then quickly move away.

Never attempt to relight a “dud” firecracker or firework.
