Copper Mill Elementary’s fifth- and sixth-grade volleyball teams had a great first year participating in the Baton Rouge Girls Athletic Association.

Coached by Cheri Perry and assistant coach Janie Tidwell, the fifth-graders competed in Division IV against Christian Life Academy, Dunham, Episcopal and St. Luke’s and ended the season with an overall record of 6-1.

On April 27, the team defeated Dunham for the 2016 BRGAA Division IV championship.

The sixth-graders competed in Division III against Dunham, Episcopal’s Blue and Gold teams, Parkview, Runnels and University Lab.

The sixth-grade girls’ ended their season with an overall 7-7 record and were defeated in the semifinal round by the 2016 Division III champions, the Parkview Lady Eagles.

“This was a great season for both teams, especially since this was the first time most of the girls had touched a volleyball,” Tidwell said. “We are so very proud of the players. They improved beyond expectations and always behaved like champions on and off the court, representing Copper Mill, their families and the sport of volleyball with such grace and poise.”
