Zachary’s Raegan Douglas, who will return to Northwestern Middle School in the fall as an eighth-grader, has been named the grand prize winner of the 2015 LSU Young Adult Literature Conference and Seminar Writing Contest for her essay “My Own Skin,” which focuses on works by author Sharon Flake.

Douglas’ award included a $75 gift as well as a lunch with a writer who took part in the conference.

Another NMS student from Zachary, Destiny Lewis, was first runner-up for her story “Who I Am,” which focuses on the works by Draper.

The teacher of both the grand prize and runner-up winners and the teacher with the most class submissions in to the contest was Margret Atkinson, who teaches sixth- through eighth-grade English at Northwestern Middle.
