Despite the gloomy, rainy weather Saturday, spectators lined Main Street in Zachary for the inaugural bed races hosted by the Zachary Charity League, which conducts fundraising events for local nonprofits.

Nine teams of five — four runners and one bed rider — included the Zachary Volunteer Fire Department, which had two teams in the races; Hot Fuzz, from the Zachary Police Department; 5 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed, a group of Zachary teachers; Psych Ward, a group of healthcare professionals and a “patient”; the Rowdy Reindeer pushing a very laid back Santa; Santa’s Reindeer, from The Ruby Salon; a Thanksgiving-themed team; and a team named Granny’s Panties.

The Zachary Fire Department won the overall race trophy, while the Thanksgiving-themed team won a trophy for being the most creative.

Nineteenth Judicial District Judge Chip Moore, a resident of Zachary, along with East Baton Rouge Metro Councilman Trae Welch, also of Zachary, emceed the event. Tess Ricketts sang the National Anthem.

Following the races, a concert was held featuring several local bands including David St. Roman.

Proceeds from the races and concert will go to the Zachary Charity League’s 2016 causes, the Lane RMC Foundation and the Zachary Food Pantry.
