For the past three years, the Pink Helmet fundraiser sponsored by the Zachary Fire Department in support of breast cancer awareness has benefited Susan G. Komen Foundation. This year it has undergone a few changes.

Held previously during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, the fundraiser is being delayed several weeks, and proceeds instead will go toward the breast cancer program at Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge, organizer and firefighter Gordon Lipscomb said.

The deadline to order a helmet has been extended until Oct. 15.

“There’s still plenty of time for businesses, families and individuals to participate by purchasing a helmet to remember someone who has died from the disease or who has survived it,” Lipscomb said. “This is new. We’ve never opened it up to residents or families before.”

Solid pink helmets will show general support for breast cancer awareness; pink camouflage-wrapped helmets will pay tribute to survivors of breast cancer; and helmets wrapped with pink ribbons will honor those who have died from breast cancer.

Lipscomb said when the helmets come in, by Dec. 1, Zachary firefighters will wear the helmets on all calls, except first aid.

For those taking part in the fundraiser for the first time, solid pink helmets will cost $315 and camouflage or pink ribbon helmets are $400 each.

For businesses that already have a helmet, the cost is $105.

All helmets will feature a black leather patch on the front inscribed with the business’ sname, year of participation, ZFD and the last name of the firefighter wearing it in December.

The camouflage or pink ribbon helmet patches also will include the name of the breast cancer survivor or person honored, the year they beat breast cancer or the year they died, said Lipscomb, whose own mother is a survivor of the disease.

Several years ago, Lipscomb and fellow firefighter Justin Bradley, whose mother died from breast cancer, got together to think of a way they could honor their mothers and the Pink Helmet campaign for breast cancer awareness was founded.

Helmets will be returned to participating businesses to display in January.

Payments must be mailed with orders to the Zachary Fire Department, P.O. Box 310, Zachary, LA 70791.

All orders must indicate the style of helmet: traditional pink, $315; camouflage pink, $400; survivor pink, $400; or recurring year, $105.

Orders must include the name of the business, survivor or honoree, along with the address, contact phone number or email address, and signature of authorized buyer or contact. Orders must be received by Oct. 15.
