This year’s Baker-Zachary Relay For Life event benefitting the American Cancer Society is slated for 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. April 15 at BREC’s Zachary Community Park. This year’s theme is Western-inspired: “Give Cancer the Boot!”

The ACS Relay For Life movement, the world’s largest and most impactful fundraising event to end cancer, unites communities worldwide to celebrate people who have battled cancer and remember loved ones lost, a news release said.

At the Baker-Zachary Relay event, plenty of Western-inspired activities, contests, games, entertainment and events are planned along with a luminaria ceremony honoring survivors and those lost to the disease.

Survivors will be honored at a breakfast and dinner, given special T-shirts and swag bags as well as recognized during special laps on Relay night.

The survivor breakfast, hosted by the Zachary Charity League, begins at 8:30 a.m. April 9 at Plains Presbyterian Church, 22929 Old Scenic Highway, in Zachary. A survivor dinner is planned for 5 p.m. at the start of Relay For Life, followed by opening ceremonies at 5:30 p.m. and the survivor-caregiver laps.

“Cancer survivors in our community are the celebratory spirit of Relay For Life, and there are lots of ways they can participate in the event,” Relay Committee Chairwoman Johnna Roose said.

Relay For Life is also about raising money and cancer awareness, and teams are encouraged to form and participate from area businesses, churches, clubs, organizations and school groups. Team incentives on Relay night include: most funds raised, most luminarias, most survivors and most laps, most event T-shirts sold, best campsite, best team spirit and people’s choice.

Attendees will vote for their favorite team campsite, and survivors will be invited to judge the stick horse rodeo in the Kid’s Corral at the event.

A team logistics meeting with everything captains need to know for Relay will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Zachary Library’s meeting room, 1900 Church St.

A team meeting is also planned for 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the West Wing Conference room at Lane Regional Medical Center, 6300 Main St. All teams should send a representative to the meetings.

The Relay For Life committee is asking that survivors share their stories at the event.

The registration deadline to participate in Relay For Life is April 7, as is the online luminaria deadline.

Additionally, volunteers are needed for decorating, luminaria set-up, service at the survivor tent, the Kid’s Corral, craft and game stations and for event break-down.
