Organizers of the Zachary community food bank’s 2014 Pack The Pantry food drive are preparing for a November push.

Representatives from Zachary’s food pantry, city, schools, men’s club, service organizations and sports groups as well as area businesses are coming together to help feed the needy.

“All donations will remain in our local food pantry and will benefit families in our community,” Mayor David Amrhein said.

As part of the Pack the Pantry food drive, a gumbo sale will be held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Nov. 14 in the City of Zachary parking lot. Tickets are $5 per bowl and are being pre-sold at the city utility office and Chris’s Meats, 4347 High St.

All proceeds from the gumbo sale will go to the Zachary Food Pantry, city officials said.

Paul Mier, of Chris’s Specialty Meats and Cajun Catch, along with his team, will be on location cooking the gumbo.

In addition to the gumbo sale, students in Zachary schools will be competing to see who can collect the most canned goods. Donations will be delivered to the food pantry POD located in the city’s parking lot.

Residents are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items to the drive from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 14.

Legendz sports teams will be collecting canned good items at LeBlanc’s Food Store, 2300 Church St., on Nov. 8 and turning them into the Pack the Pantry. Firefighters will visit elementary schools in their fire trucks collecting can goods in the days prior to Nov. 14.

“With the funds raised through events such as these, the Zachary Food Pantry is able to provide much needed food for the hungry in our area,” food pantry director Reggie Dykes said.

The Zachary Food Pantry is staffed by 32 volunteers who serve more than 75 families weekly. In 2013, the Zachary Food Pantry served 1,115 families.

All households who receive meals must properly qualify according to income criteria and must live in the Zachary Community School District’s legal boundaries, Dykes said.
