The Zachary High football team’s 5A state championship win over John Ehret High School in December has brought with it plenty of accolades for the players and the team.

The most recent honor was bestowed at the Jan. 19 Zachary School Board meeting held at the ZHS Performing Arts Center to accommodate the 100-plus members of the football squad.

Each player and coach received a certificate of recognition from board members and Superintendent Scott Devillier, along with plenty of praise.

School administrators were honored, as well.

Family and friends of the team also attended the meeting and were treated to a video montage set to music of the victory in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.

“We try to be the best at everything we do, and we have this amazing community support when it comes to education, but I know when you played at the Dome, you were well-represented,” Devillier said.

Outgoing School Board President Hubie Owen said he was thrilled at how the players handled themselves.

When it was coach David Brewerton’s turn to speak, he said, “My vision is to try to match the football program with the academic program and the many years it’s been at No. 1.”
