Area members of the Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts Class of 2016 were recognized with awards during the 32nd annual senior recognition program on May 20 on the campus of Northwestern State University in Natchitoches.

LSMSA Excellence Award winners were Jamin Kidd, of Zachary, Latin, mathematics and science; and Bailey Dixon, of Zachary, science and sports education.

The honorees received LSMSA medallions in their specific disciplines.

Kidd also received the Eric Candell Excellence in Physics award, given by the Candell family each year since 1996 to the senior who the science faculty believes best exhibits excellence in physics.

“It is an honor for me to present this award to a student who embodies excellence by completing advanced quantum mechanics, math physics and other courses that physics majors take in their third and fourth years of college,” said Robert Dalling, instructor of physics.

Dixon received the Caroline Dorman Scholar award and the Dr. Sharon Sturdivant Williams Praecellemus award.

The Caroline Dormon Scholar award goes to a student who excels in biology and related disciplines and also shows interests in the humanities and arts.

The Dr. Sharon Sturdivant Williams Praecellemus award is presented to a senior who throughout his or her tenure at LSMSA has exemplified the school’s motto: “We Shall Excel.”

“(Dixon) is always ready to help other students with personal or academic issues,” Patrick Widhalm, executive director of LSMSA, said of Dixon. “Another outstanding qualify of this student is her dedication to excellence in whatever she pursues. And she pursues far more than what is simply required.”
