The Zachary Kiwanis Club is accepting donated shoes of any kind in good condition from now until April 29 for its Shoes For Shots project, a twofold fundraiser that will pay to vaccinate mothers in 24 countries against neonatal tetanus and put shoes on the feet of people in several developing nations, where shoes are hard to get.

Through funds2orgs.com, the organization will pay Kiwanis 40 cents per pound of shoes, and 2½ pairs equates to about $1.80, which is enough to vaccinate a mother and prevent a child’s death.

Funds2orgs.com also will help Kiwanis redistribute the donated shoes to micro-businesses in other countries that will employ people to clean and sell the shoes at affordable prices to those who need them.

From now until April 29, anyone can drop off shoes at the Zachary Fire Department, 4525 Main St., or from April 18-22, drop unwanted shoes off at any Zachary school. Shoes will be packaged and sent to funds2orgs.com on April 30.

For information, call Kiwanian Al Phillips at (225) 654-0012.

Daisy Chains luncheon

Bereaved mothers from Zachary and the surrounding areas are invited to attend a Mother’s Day luncheon at 11 a.m. April 30 at First Baptist Church of Zachary, 4200 Main St.

This event is an opportunity for mothers to celebrate and honor deceased children. The Daisy Chains luncheon was started in 2011 by Jorenda Thornton, whose son, Brent, died in a 1994 vehicle crash.

Daisy Chains, which pertains to the chains of flowers little girls often create, is based on the circle of compassion other grieving mothers can form to support one another.

For information or to register, call (225) 931-2767 or email women@fbcz.org by April 22.

Send news and events for Around Zachary to Stacy Gill at sgill@theadvocate.com by 3 p.m. Fridays or call (225) 993-0066.
