Newcomer welcome packets designed by the marketing committee at the Zachary Chamber of Commerce have previously included materials by Zachary businesses. The Chamber, however, has run out of donated materials.

Examples of items needed include pens, pencils, magnets, coupons or gadgets that will fit inside an 8 1/2-inch by 11-inch bag. Packets are sent to the Zachary utility office and given to each new resident signing up for service. Businesses or members must be current on Chamber dues to participate.

Marketing materials can be dropped off between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Chamber office, 4633 Main St.

Email Heather Prejean at heather@zacharychamber.com or call (225) 654-6777 with questions.

Blood drive planned

Lane Regional Medical Center and United Blood Services are co-hosting a blood drive from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday in Lane’s Staff Development Classroom, 6300 Main St., Zachary.

Appointments are not required, but donors are encouraged to sign up online at unitedbloodservices.org by entering the code: LaneRegional.

UBS is the sole provider of blood to Lane and its service areas. Everyone is encouraged to donate.

Siege of Port Hudson

The annual Siege of Port Hudson re-enactment from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday will provide visitors with access to volunteer re-enactors in Union and Confederate campsites performing typical activities of the assaults.

Soldiers dressed in authentic reproduction uniforms will be on hand to answer questions pertaining to the siege during the summer of 1863. The three branches of the services — artillery, cavalry and infantry — will be portrayed as well as cooks, laundresses and sutlers.

Concessions at the event will be sold by Zachary High band students.

For information, call (225) 654-3775.

Alateen meetings

Zachary Al-Anon is forming an Alateen group that will meet at 3 p.m. Mondays at Zachary United Methodist Church, 4205 Church St.

Alateen is a group of family and friends, usually teens, whose lives have been affected by someone else’s drinking. The Alateen groups are sponsored by Al-Anon members who help the group stay on track, and meetings consist of sharing experiences, strength and hope, discussing difficulties, learning effective ways to cope with problems, encouraging one another and helping each other understand the principles of the program.

All teens are invited. For information, call (225) 924-0029.
