Coed soccer team forming

Baton Rouge Homeschool Athletic Association will host a coed soccer team this year, participating in the Association of Christian Educators of Louisiana.

Although the first practice was held Sept. 12, there is still time for boys and girls ages 13 to 18 to join. Some 12-year-olds may be allowed to participate, as well.

Practices will be held at BREC’s Plank Road Park, 19550 Plank Road, in Zachary, but home games will be played at the West Feliciana Sports Park, 10166 W. Feliciana Parkway, St. Francisville. Remaining practice dates are Sept. 26 and Oct. 3, 17 and 19. The first game is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 20.

If your homeschooled child would like to participate, email or call coach Jerald Hardy at (225) 247-2407.

Photo mystery solved ... sort of

Several weeks ago, The Zachary Advocate and Plainsman published an old photo of a mystery couple that was in the possession of Zachary resident Roma Prejean, who asked for the community’s help in identifying the couple in the photo.

After seeing the story and photo in the Plainsman, it was determined that the couple appeared to resemble a photograph of Zachary founder Darel Zachary and his wife that appeared in the book “Zachary Places and Faces.”

“It’s a close match; the Zacharys appear older in the book, but the wife is wearing a brooch that looks just like the one in the photograph that I had,” Prejean said. “When we put the pictures side by side, several people agreed it looked like the Zacharys, but nobody was certain.”

The photograph of the couple will be framed and hung in one of the homes in Zachary Historical Village.

Free family exercise class offered

The Americana YMCA understands that health begins at home and supports families in their efforts to build a healthy family home, a news release said.

In observance of National Family Health Awareness Month, a free family Zumba class will be offered to families looking to get active during the month of October. The class will begin at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 11 at the YMCA, 4200 Liberty Way, Zachary.

Also, the Y suggests these tips for families aiming to get healthy during October:

Aim for five servings of fruits and vegetables daily.

Choose drinks with care by cutting out drinks with added sugar, focusing on adding more water.

Control portions.

Set aside an hour every day for the entire family to play together.

Make family time a priority.

Go outside.

Sleep well — 5- to 12-year-olds should get 10 to 12 hours of sleep a night.
