A total of 88 Northwestern Middle School art, band and choir students spent April 21-26 at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, attending workshops and performing in student competitions.

Art teacher Heather Savoie, band teacher Carla Murray and choir teacher Cassi Doherty led their students, accompanied by 10 chaperones, through programs in Disney’s Youth Education Series.

Savoie’s 22 art students participated in the “History of Animation and Photo Storytelling,” learning how to sketch a famous Disney character with a Disney animator, experiment with early production processes and develop storytelling skills.

“They put storyboards together and experienced the creative ideas Disney Imagineers possess to achieve their goals,” Savoie said. “The overall experience was fantastic and magical.”

Band and choir students competed in Festival Disney against several other bands and choirs from schools across the country.

Zachary’s middle school choir earned a superior rating, won best in class and the gold award, while the jazz band earned an excellent rating and concert band received a good rating from judges.

Prior to the trip, the students held fundraisers to earn money for expenses, Savoie said.
