A pet adoption event featuring 13 dogs from Pen Pals Inc. Animal Shelter at Dixon Correctional Institute in Jackson was held Saturday at the Zachary Branch Library.

Despite the breezy weather, families stopped by visit with the pets and learn about the adoption program.

Chestnut, a friendly mixed breed, was adopted by Bree Anders, of Zachary, who has volunteered previously at the SPCA of Livingston and Denham Springs Animal Shelter.

“I love dogs, what can I say?” Anders said.

As soon as she saw Chestnut, she knew she had to take him home, even though she already has a dog, she said.

With the blessing of her mother, Anders counted the money in her wallet and for $40 was able to take Chestnut home.

Another dog named Short Stuff, was adopted by a Zachary woman but was first fawned over by Joshua Berst, 10, a student at Zachary Elementary, who already has a turtle and lizard.

“I wish I could take this one home,” Berst said, while holding the tiny mixed breed wrapped in a blanket.

Most of the dogs and cats that arrive at Pen Pals are in need of basic nutrition and tender loving care, DCI Col. John Smith said.

“We nurse them back to health and help make them ready to go home to a loving family,” said Smith, who oversees the facility with Shane Winans.

The LSU School of Veterinary Medicine sends veterinarians and students regularly to the facility to spay and neuter the animals, and inmates assigned to the facility have earned certificates through the LSU Vet School’s Shelter Medicine Program. They work daily cleaning cages, feeding and watering the animals, taking them out for exercise, administering care and teaching basic commands.

Pen Pals is a nonprofit no kill animal shelter that serves East Feliciana Parish and surrounding areas.

Adoption fees are $40 for dogs and cats, and arrangements to view the pets can be made by calling (225) 634-1200.

Upcoming Pen Pals adoption events are slated for April 3 at Tulane University, April 16-17 at the Angola Prison Rodeo in West Feliciana Parish and May 1 at Pet Sense in Zachary.
